Jennings signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Knicks on Monday, Vincent Goodwill of CSN Chicago reports. One of the more active teams during free agency this offseason, the Knicks have picked up another backcourt piece, inking Jennings to a one-year deal. Jennings appeared to have a falling out with Magic coach Scott Skiles at the end of the season, making his departure all the more unsurprising. Jennings should provide another affordable depth option for the Knicks in the backcourt, likely taking the role as Derrick Rose’s backup at point guard. Considering Rose’s lengthy injury history, Jennings is in a good spot to see extended playing time down the road should anything happen to the Knicks’ new starter.

Jennings was a DNP-CD in the Magic’s season finale Wednesday.Jennings concluded the season with a string of four straight DNP-CDs, which did not appear to be injury-related. It’s unclear if something was going on behind the scenes, but coach Scott Skiles chose to go with Elfrid Payton and C.J. Watson as his two point guards down the stretch. The 26-year-old Jennings, who came to Orlando in a deadline deal with Detroit, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
March 26, 2016
Jennings had eight points (2-7 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-5 FT), three rebounds, three assists, and one steal across 17 minutes during the Magic’s 108-97 loss to the Heat on Friday.Jennings moved to a bench role with Elfrid Payton re-claiming his spot in the starting lineup. However, Jennings saw just 11 minutes during Wednesday’s start versus the Pistons, and is averaging 22 minutes per contest over the last five games. Meanwhile, fellow backup point guard C.J. Watson played 19 minutes on Friday, so there is plenty of competition for minutes even if Victor Oladipo (wrist) remains sidelined on Saturday.
March 25, 2016
Jennings will return to the bench for Friday’s game against Miami, John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com reports.Jennings has started the last six contests, partially due to an injury to Elfrid Payton, but he’ll return to the bench Friday as Payton moves back into the lineup. Despite starting Wednesday’s matchup with Detroit, Jennings only played 11 minutes to Payton’s 34, so both players’ roles should remain fairly constant Friday. However, Victor Oladipo is considered “50-50” to play due to a wrist injury, so if he’s ultimately held out, Jennings could potentially see increased minutes off the ball.
March 20, 2016
Jennings will continue to start at point guard in Sunday’s tilt with the Raptors, John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com reports. The Magic will welcome Elfrid Payton (elbow) back into the mix after a five-game absence, but he’ll likely remain on a minutes limit, enabling Jennings to make his fourth straight start at point guard. After faring well in his first two starts, Jennings regressed Friday against the Cavaliers, finishing with two points (1-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt) in 32 minutes. It shouldn’t be long before Payton takes back the starting role, but even if that doesn’t happen immediately, Jennings figures to see an immediate downturn in his court time.

Jennings (Achilles) took part in Monday’s practice, Brian K. Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports.Jennings’ participation in practice looks to put him on track to play Tuesday against the Nuggets, a welcome development after he sat out Saturday against the Blazers due to the injury. It doesn’t look like Elfrid Payton (elbow) will be available Tuesday, so if Jennings plays, he could see elevated minutes and even serve as the starting point guard.
  • Achilles
Date: Mar 14, 2016
Status: OUT
Jennings relayed that he’s been dealing with pain on the bottom of his foot rather than his Achilles, and believes he’ll be ready to suit up Tuesday against the Nuggets, NBA.com reports. “The Achilles is fine,” Jennings said. “[The injury] was just over time. So it’s nothing serious. It’s just soreness and I should be good [by Tuesday].”Jennings missed Saturday’s game against the Trail Blazers with the injuries, leaving the Magic a little thin at point guard since Elfrid Payton (elbow) also sat out. It seems like Jennings is further along in his recovery of the two at this stage, so if Jennings is indeed ready to play Tuesday, he could end up splitting the minutes at point guard with C.J. Watson.

Jennings has been ruled out of Saturday’s matchup with the Trail Blazers due to a Achilles soreness. The severity of the injury is still relatively unknown but considering it’s only soreness in the Achilles, Jennings may be able to return to the court as soon as Tuesday. Elfrid Payton (elbow) is a game-time call and if ruled out, the Magic will be thin at point guard, with C.J. Watson the likely candidate to start. Shabazz Napier could see extended minutes off the bench.

Jennings has a “50-50” chance of playing in Monday’s game against the Bulls, Keith Langlois of Pistons.com reports.Jennings hurt his ankle during Saturday’s contest with the Warriors, which now brings his status for Monday into question. The point guard’s availability is currently considered a coin flip, but we should see Jennings’ status updated following Monday morning’s shootaround. If Jennings is ultimately unable to play, look for Steve Blake to serve as the top backup to Reggie Jackson.

Jennings left Saturday’s contest against the Warriors due to a jammed ankle, Keith Langlois of the Pistons’ official site reports.Relegated to bench duty since making his season debut on Dec. 29, Jennings notched two points (1-5 FG, 0-2 3Pt), one rebound, one assist, and one steal in eight minutes before his departure Saturday. While a foot injury is always a concern for a player less than one year removed from a torn Achilles, expect the veteran point guard’s status to be clarified in due time. If Jennings requires some time to heal, Steve Blake will serve as Reggie Jackson’s primary backup at the point.

Jennings (Achilles) will be in uniform for Tuesday’s game against the Heat, but he’s not expected to play in any of the Pistons’ three games this week, David Mayo of MLive.com reports.Jennings notched a double-double for the D-League’s Grand Rapids Drive on Sunday, and while he certainly looked to have his quickness back, the Pistons will continue to bring him along slowly as he recovers from a torn Achilles. There’s a chance Jennings could play Tuesday (at Miami), Wednesday (at Atlanta) or Saturday (versus Boston) — he hasn’t officially been ruled out — but at this point, it looks as though the team is targeting Dec. 29 against the Knicks for the guard’s season debut.

Coach Stan Van Gundy has yet to sign off on the move, however, so it’s possible Jennings could remain held out of game action and instead continue his recovery process during Pistons practices. Jennings (Achilles) is planning to return to game action Dec. 29 against the Knicks, Vincent Goodwill of CSN Chicago reports. This news comes after a report Wednesday morning indicating Jennings could play with the Pistons’ D-League affiliate at Grand Rapids this coming weekend. Whether that happens or not, Jennings appears to be roughly two weeks away from making his season debut after an Achilles tear put an end to his 2014-15 campaign. Jennings figures to come off the bench with Reggie Jackson firmly entrenched as Detroit’s starting point guard, though coach Stan Van Gundy did indicate during the offseason that he may consider playing Jennings and Jackson together at times. Regardless, given the Pistons’ decision to extend Jackson this summer, Jennings and his team-friendly $8 million expiring deal would appear to be one of the league’s top trade candidates.

Jennings (Achilles) officially resumed practicing with the team earlier this week, Terry Foster of the Detroit News reports.Jennings had previously been participating in some drills and other portions of practice over the last several weeks, but it now appears he’s beginning to get in some full workouts with the Pistons. The team hasn’t issued an outline for the point guard’s return, but according to Foster, the Dec. 29 tilt with the Knicks or the Dec. 31 game against the Timberwolves might represent a realistic return date. Once he’s cleared to return to duty, Jennings will assume the top backup duties behind Reggie Jackson at point guard, taking away most of the minutes that have been going to Steve Blake and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Despite that minor setback, Jennings is still expected to steadily increase his activities over the next couple of weeks, and seems willing to embrace the sixth-man role the Pistons have on tap for him now that Reggie Jackson is solidified as the starting point guard. Jennings (Achilles) confirmed Monday that he’s been cleared to continue basketball-related activities, but was non-committal on when he’d return to the Detroit lineup, David Mayo of MLive.com reports. For the time being, Jennings is limited to light shooting, running in the pool, and running on a weight-bearing treadmill, so he won’t be a candidate to participate in full practices during training camp. Though his return timetable remains up in the air, the Pistons are hopeful Jennings can take the court as soon as mid-December, which would be contingent on him participating in drills by mid-October and adding five-on-five activities to his regimen in mid-November. Jennings mentioned Tuesday that he now weighs in at 195 pounds after eight months of inactivity following the Jan. 24 Achilles surgery, but he expects to return to his playing weight of 170 once he starts working out more vigorously. Jennings (Achilles) is expected to remain out until mid-to-late December, the Detroit Free Press reports.Jennings tore his Achilles in January during a stretch in which he and the Pistons were playing arguably their best basketball of the season. The point guard was averaging just shy of 16 points per game prior to the injury, and the PIstons were 12-3 in their last 15 games prior to Jennings going down. With Jennings sidelined for the remainder of the season, Detroit acquired Reggie Jackson at the trade deadline, subsequently signing him to a five-year, $80 million extension this summer. With Jackson set to serve as the starter, Jennings has stated that he’s fine with coming off the bench, but coach Stan Van Gundy said he could envision the two point guards playing together. “If he comes back and he’s the Brandon Jennings that we had last year, I think those guys can play together quite well,” Van Gundy said. “Reggie is big enough (6-feet-3) to guard guys off the ball and everything else. It just gives you two playmakers on the floor together. I think they can be pretty dynamic, but we’ll just have to see where Brandon is when he comes back.”

Jennings (Achilles) has no qualms coming off the bench as a sixth man, and he will not rush the recovery process after tearing his Achilles in January, the Detroit Free Press reports. “If I have to come off the bench and be the sixth man or whatever, I’m fine with that,” Jennings said.In an interview with Jabari Young and Vincent Goodwill of Comcast SportNet, Jennings reiterated that he thought the Pistons acquiring Reggie Jackson was a smart move for the organization. On the final year of his contract, Jennings will likely be brought along slowly and play behind Jackson, occasionally playing opposite the Pistons’ starting point guard. Coach Stan Van Gundy recently admitted Jennings may not be ready for the start of the season. It’s also possible Van Gundy moves Jennings prior to the trade deadline to recoup some value. Jennings appeared in and started 41 games before a ruptured Achilles in January cut his season short. The Pistons got off to a horrendous start to the season, but Jennings was one of the primary reasons they were able to temporarily right the ship after annexing Josh Smith. During a 10-game stretch in which the Pistons went 9-1 and surged into the Eastern Conference playoff discussion, Jennings averaged 20.3 points, 7.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the field and 42.2 percent from three. It was easily his best stretch of the season and arguably the most consistent stretch of his career. Jennings’ numbers regressed a bit over the next week, but he posted a ridiculous 24-point, 21-assist line on Jan. 21, the last full game he’d play before the injury. Jennings was given a 6-to-9 month recovery timetable, so he’ll likely be ready right around the time the 2015-16 season kicks off. As of mid-March he had begun weight training, and the rehab appears to be progressing as expected. Jennings enters the offseason with one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed with Detroit in the summer of 2013. His future with the franchise is murky at this point, however, after the Pistons traded for restricted-free-agent-to-be, Reggie Jackson, at the deadline. If Jackson re-signs with Detroit, Jennings would likely become expendable, meaning the Pistons may look to deal his expiring contract. If they opt to hold onto Jennings, it’s likely he’ll come off the bench behind Jackson as he works his way back from the Achilles injury.
