Rubio is dealing with a minor thigh injury and was sidelined for the Spanish national team’s exhibition with Lithuania on Monday, Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV reports.Rubio picked up the injury last week in an exhibition game against Angola, but was only held out Monday for precautionary purposes. Rubio was held to two points (1-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt), but finished with nine assists, four rebounds, and a steal over 34 minutes in Tuesday’s 124-117 overtime upset of the Warriors. The two points gave Rubio his lowest scoring night since March 8, and extended his streak of single-digit points to four games. As has been the case throughout his career, Rubio’s broken jump shot remains the main source of his recent demise, as he’s hit only 7-of-30 attempts (23.3%) from the field during that stretch. In spite of those struggles, Rubio has managed to become more of a three-point threat of late, as Tuesday marked the first time in the last 13 games that he failed to knock down a single shot from downtown.

March 29, 2016
Rubio compiled 17 points (6-15 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 3-4 FT), 11 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals in 34 minutes during the Timberwolves’ 121-116 victory against the Suns on Monday.Rubio was three rebounds away from a triple-double, but he also committed six turnovers. He has made nine threes in the last five games, upping his total on the season to 56 made triples. Meanwhile, this was his seventh double-double in March and his 13th of 2015-16. Rubio is closing the season on a high note, showing some serious improvement in the shooting department.

March 22, 2016
Rubio recorded 20 points (5-9 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 7-7 FT), 11 assists, four rebounds, four steals, and one block across 33 minutes during the Timberwolves’ 109-104 loss to the Warriors on Monday.Rubio matched his season-high with three three-pointers on Monday, and all three of these performances have happened in February and March. He has made 50 three-pointers on the season, which is five more than his previous high for a campaign, and Rubio is actually averaging 1.5 threes through 10 March matchups. It has been his best overall month as well, as he is averaging 13.1 points (44.6 FG, 39.5 3Pt, 93.3 FT), nine assists to 3.2 turnovers, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 32 minutes during March.

March 19, 2016
Rubio contributed 14 points (6-9 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-1 FT), six assists, three rebounds and a block over 32 minutes in Friday’s 116-111 loss to the Rockets. The 25-year-old Spaniard continued his recent strong stretch of play, posting his fourth straight double-digit scoring outing, and fifth in the last six games. Rubio did see his streak of three consecutive double-doubles come to an end, but encouragingly shot 50 percent or better for the second straight game. A notoriously mediocre shooter, Rubio has nevertheless managed to demonstrate improvement in his field-goal percentages in each successive month of the campaign, and is currently posting a season-best 43 percent figure over nine March games.

Timberwolves coach Sam Mitchell said after Monday’s practice session that Rubio (ankle) should play Tuesday against the Magic, Kent Youngblood of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Rubio, who missed the Wolves’ last two games with soreness in his left ankle, was able to participate fully in Monday’s session, and looks to be ready to reclaim his starting point guard role. The Timberwolves should formally clarify whether or not Rubio will be available following pregame warmups, but as of now, it looks like Zach LaVine, who has performed well in his starting opportunities in place of Rubio this season, will head back to a reserve role.

Rubio (ankle) is targeting a return for Tuesday’s game against Orlando, Darren Wolson of 1500 ESPN reports.Rubio aggravated his ankle injury during Wednesday’s game against Atlanta, and he was held out Friday versus Sacramento, as well as Sunday against the Clippers. Rubio won’t play in Sunday’s game against the Clippers, Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Rubio went through a pregame workout Sunday, but will be held out of the game as a precautionary measure to further rest his sore ankle. Though he’ll be inactive Sunday, Rubio doesn’t seem far from a return and will be aiming to heal up in time for Tuesday’s matchup with the Magic. Zach LaVine started for Rubio on Friday, so the Timberwolves will likely go that route again Sunday. Andre Miller should also see an increase in minutes while assuming the backup point guard role during Rubio’s absence.

Rubio (ankle) is aiming to play Sunday against the Clippers, the Star Tribune reports.Rubio was scratched from Friday’s game against the Kings due to ankle injury, but the team does not believe the ailment is related to the injury that cost him 22 games last season. Rubio (hamstring) is considered questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Magic.Rubio returned to the court Tuesday night after missing four games with a hamstring strain, playing 27 minutes and finishing with seven points and three assists in the win over Miami. While Rubio didn’t appear to aggravate the injury, the Wolves will be cautious with their starting point guard on the second half of a back-to-back set. If Rubio is ultimately held out, Zach LaVine would likely get the nod at point guard Wednesday.

Rubio (hamstring) was able to go through the Wolves’ morning shootaround Wednesday, but his status remains undetermined for the team’s game later in the evening against the Magic, Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV reports.Rubio, who played 27 minutes in his return to the lineup during Tuesday’s win over the Heat, didn’t appear to have suffered any setbacks with his left hamstring during the contest, and was able to complete shootaround without any apparent discomfort. Still, because he’s only recently returned from a four-game absence and the Wolves are playing the second game of a back-to-back set Wednesday, there’s still a chance that Rubio could be held out for precautionary purposes. Fortunately for daily gamers, the Timberwolves will play at 7:00 ET, when the first bunch of games on Wednesday’s slate are on tap, allowing for late lineup maneuvers. Continue to monitor the news surrounding Rubio when the Timberwolves begin warming up roughly a half hour prior to tip off, as Zach LaVine would likely get the start at point guard and make an excellent daily value play if Rubio is ruled out.

Rubio (hamstring) said he felt good following Tuesday’s shooatround, but his status remains undetermined for the evening game against the Heat, Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. While it’s a positive sign for Rubio after he was able to practice Monday, it’s probably worthwhile to tread carefully with the point guard for those who are considering using him for daily lineups. During his four-game absence, Rubio was listed as probable to play on two occasions, only to be ruled out shortly before game time. Confirmation on Rubio’s status one way or the other isn’t likely to be handed down until after pregame warmups, making him a dicey investment for the Tuesday slate. The Wolves indicated that they’ll wait until after Tuesday’s shootaround to make a decision, and if Rubio is ultimately ruled out, Zach LaVine would likely make another start at point guard. Rubio (ankle) has been working on improving his jump shot and upper body strength in the four months since ankle surgery, Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated reports. “I try to get 100-200 shots a day up without jumping,” Rubio said. “For the first three months [after surgery], I was doing low-impact work in the gym, working out my upper body, working on my core strength.”Rubio is steadily ramping up workouts in preparation for training camp. He was limited to 22 games last season due to recurring ankle issues and underwent surgery in early April. He mentioned in the interview that the injury stalled his shooting development. A career 31-percent three-point shooter, Rubio’s improved upper body strength should allow him to finish at the basket more frequently. Over his four-year career, his field goal percentage has suffered because of his 47-percent accuracy inside the restricted area, roughly 13 percent below the league average. Rubio’s (ankle) camp has been pushing for a trade for quite some time, Chad Ford of ESPN reports. President/coach Flip Saunders refuted Ford’s report Wednesday. “That’s totally untrue,” Saunders said.Rubio averaged 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 0.1 blocks, and 2.3 steals on 37 percent field goal shooting in 32 minutes per game this season. That’s good production, but he played in just 22 games, sitting out most of the season with a high-ankle sprain. With Rubio out, the Timberwolves were able to evaluate their team without him in the lineup, and if they like the way Andrew Wiggins plays with Zach LaVine more than they do Rubio, it’s possible a trade could materialize at some point. The Timberwolves landed the first-overall pick for the 2015 NBA Draft at Tuesday’s lottery. Ford is on record as saying that the Timberwolves have no preference between Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor, the consensus top two picks. The Timberwolves could go against conventional thought and draft a guard like Emmanuel Mudiay or D’Angelo Russell, which could mean a trade involving Rubio. At this point, it’s all speculation, but the fact that Ford was willing to put his name on the story means there may be smoke where there’s fire.

Rubio appeared in only 22 games in 2014-15 while battling ankle injuries.Durability was an issue for Rubio during his first two NBA seasons, but he played and started all 82 games in 2013-14. The injury bug returned this season, however, robbing him of two significant chunks of time. Just five games into the season, Rubio went down with a severe left ankle sprain, which kept him out from early November to early February. Once Rubio returned to the court, he did not look like himself, as he shot just 33 percent in February while turning the ball over more than three times per game in 31.4 minutes. The struggles continued until he re-aggravated the left ankle injury against the Thunder on Mar. 13. Rubio would appear in only one more game the rest of the season as the Timberwolves went into a freefall and finished the season on a 13-game losing streak. Minnesota announced on April 13 that Rubio underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on the ankle, a procedure that will entail a recovery period of a few months. While his ankle is progressing, Rubio is still not to the point where the training staff believes he’ll be able to play at the highest level. “He’s not going to have the explosiveness he had, just because you never catch up that when you get hurt in this part of the season,” Saunders said.
