F Marvin Williams has opted to stay with the Charlotte Hornets, agreeing to sign a four-year, $54.5 million deal with the team Saturday. The deal includes a player option for the fourth year, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, who first reported the signing. The 30-year-old forward also drew interest from the Brooklyn Nets and had offers in the range of $15 million per year, per Wojnarowski. Wojnarowski said that Williams’ role in the Hornets’ system and relationship with coach Steve Clifford factored into his decision. Williams has played for three teams during his 11-year career, beginning with the Atlanta Hawks, who selected him No. 2 overall in the 2005 draft. After spending seven seasons with the Hawks, Williams joined the Utah Jazz for two seasons before signing a two-year contract with Charlotte in 2014. Last year with the Hornets, Williams averaged 11.7 points — his highest scoring average since 2008-09 — and 6.4 rebounds in 81 games.

Williams agreed to a four-year, $54.5 million deal with the Hornets on Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reports.Williams will return to Charlotte after playing there the past two season, starting in every game he played last year. He averaged a career high 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game last season, along with scoring 11.7 points per contest on 45 percent shooting. Look for Williams to return to his role as a starter on the team in what will be his 12th NBA season.
May 2, 2016
Williams was limited to five points (1-3 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT) and five rebounds in 33 minutes during Sunday’s 106-73 Game 7 loss to the Heat. The five-point effort concludes a disappointing series for Williams, who averaged just 5.1 points (on 27.5% shooting), 6.7 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.9 three-pointers across 32.6 minutes in the seven games. According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, coach Steve Clifford attributed Williams’ shooting woes to a right elbow injury, but the ailment wasn’t severe enough to affect the veteran’s minutes. He’ll likely only need a week or two to fully recover from the injury, so it shouldn’t affect his status as he enters free agency this offseason.

F Marvin Williams (elbow) scored five points in 33 minutes Sunday in Game 7 against Miami. Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said Williams wasn’t 100 percent.
Injuries
  • Ankle
Date: Mar 22, 2016
Status: OUT
Williams is considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Nets due to a sprained left ankle. This is the first we’re hearing of the injury, but it would help to explain why Williams was limited to 22 minutes in Monday’s win over the Spurs, his lowest minutes total in more than a month. Expect a decision on Williams’ status later in the day, and if he’s ultimately held out, the Hornets would likely have to shuffle the starting lineup, as they’re absent of another stretch-four kind of player.

  • Neck
Date: Feb 18, 2016
Status: OUT
Williams is dealing with a neck strain and is considered questionable for Friday’s game against the Bucks. The severity of Williams’ neck injury doesn’t appear to be anything too severe, but the Hornets could be thin if he’s unable to go on Friday, as both Courtney Lee (coach’s decision) and Spencer Hawes (back) have been ruled out, with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (shoulder) also sidelined following season-ending surgery. Frank Kaminsky, Al Jefferson, and Cody Zeller could be asked to shoulder more minutes if Williams ends up sitting out.

Date: Nov 16, 2015

  • Knee
Date: Nov 15, 2014
Status: OUT
Williams (knee) started and scored five points (2-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt) while adding two rebounds and a steal in 23 minutes against the Suns Friday.Williams had been listed as doubtful earlier in the day, but he managed to play through his injury. Even when fully healthy Williams never really stuffs a box score, but his production Friday was below his own average in almost every category. Unfortunately for fantasy players, Williams’ nightly production is so low in the first place that it is hard to tell if the below-average night was due to the injury or just random nightly variance. If it was the injury that hampered Williams, then managers should take caution using him Saturday, since he will have little time to recover before his next game. If not, however, then Williams remains a sneaky source of threes while providing enough value across several other categories to be a useful option in deep leagues.

Date: Nov 15, 2014
Status: OUT
Williams (knee) will start Saturday night against the Warriors, the Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell reports.Williams was able to play through the injury Friday, so there was little reason to think he would miss Saturday’s tilt. He’ll be in his usual spot in the starting lineup.
  • Knee

Status: OUT
Williams (knee) is in the starting lineup Friday against the Suns.Williams will not only suit up for Friday’s game, but will also start. He was initially considered doubtful after it was revealed he was dealing with tendinitis in his left knee. If he is limited in his minutes, Cody Zeller and Jason Maxiell could be the beneficiaries of added time.
  • Knee
Date: Nov 14, 2014
Status: OUT
Williams (knee) will suit up Friday against Phoenix, Suns.com reports.Williams was considered doubtful heading into the contest, but it appears the Hornets feel comfortable enough with his health to keep him active Friday. However, the report notes that Williams will be monitored in the early going just to make sure his knee is sound, potentially putting him at risk of seeing playing time below the 27 minutes he’s averaged this season. The veteran forward is a solid rotation player for the Bobcats, but with averages of 7.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists, he hasn’t produced enough counting stats to make much of an impact in fantasy circles.
  • Knee
Date: Nov 13, 2014
Status: OUT
Williams (knee) is considered doubtful for Friday’s game against the Suns, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.Williams is dealing with tendinitis in his left knee, which flared up following Tuesday’s game against the Blazers. • Knee
Date: Nov 13, 2014
Status: Doub Fri
Williams is unlikely to play Friday against the Suns due to a knee injury.
  • Elbow
Date: Oct 20, 2014
Status: OUT
Williams (elbow) will not play Monday against the Hawks.Williams is listed as out with a right elbow contusion, presumably suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Bulls. It doesn’t look like anything serious, though, and Williams remains on track to open the season as the starting power forward, where he should see plenty of time on the perimeter.
