C Al Jefferson joined the Pacers on a three-year, $30 million deal. Jefferson never spent more than three seasons with any team. A below-the-rim post player, his signing seems to signal McMillan will play some slower-pace, half-court sets while primarily preferring an up-tempo offense. Jefferson, 31, was drafted by the Celtics but traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he worked under former Bird teammate Kevin McHale. Last season he was limited by a knee injury and served a five-game suspension for violating the substance-abuse policy and averaged 12 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also has a history of chronic foot problems.

C Al Jefferson agreed in principle to three-year, $30 million deal with the Pacers, multiple media outlets reported Friday. According to reports, it would be a straight three-year deal with no player options. Last season for the Hornets, Jefferson, 31, averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 47 games, including 18 starts.

Jefferson agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract with the Pacers Friday, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reports.Jefferson is coming off his least productive season since his second year in the NBA, averaging just 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, and he also only played in 47 games due to injury. At 31 years old, Jefferson is limited in his effectiveness as a low post player, especially with the league moving towards smaller, faster lineups. The Pacers are one of those teams that wants to play faster around star forward Paul George, so Jefferson will likely play majority of his minutes off the bench next season behind Myles Turner.
April 30, 2016
Jefferson scored 18 points (8-14 FG, 2-3 FT) while adding nine rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes during Friday’s loss to the Heat in Game 6 of their first round series. It’s the Hornets’ first loss since inserting Jefferson back into the starting lineup. The big man is now averaging 14.8 points, 6.8 boards, 0.7 steals and 0.5 blocks on the series while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor, but he’ll need to come up with one more big performance if they’re going to come up with a Game 7 win in Miami on Sunday.
April 23, 2016
Jefferson will move into the starting lineup for Saturday’s Game 3 against Miami.Down 0-2, the Hornets will resort to switching up their starting lineup, inserting Jefferson and Frank Kaminsky in the front court and sending Jeremy Lin and Cody Zeller to the bench. Marvin Williams will shift down to the small forward spot, while Courtney Lee and Kemba Walker comprise the starting backcourt.

Jefferson (quad) is considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Raptors.Jefferson is still nursing a bruised right quad, which kept him out of Sunday afternoon’s loss to the Cavaliers. Jefferson is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cavaliers with a right quad contusion. It’s unclear when the injury occurred or how severe it really is, but it will put Jefferson’s status into uncertainty Sunday. Considering the Hornets are battling for playoff positioning, Jefferson might try and play through the injury, although we’ll have to wait until closer to tip off before receiving the official word on his availability. If he’s unable to give it a go, Spencer Hawes would likely enter the Hornets’ rotation of big men.

Jefferson (quad) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cavaliers, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com reports.Jefferson tried to warm up, but came to the decision afterwards that he wasn’t ready to play just yet due to the ailment. Since his injury is just being labeled as a quad contusion, Jefferson figures to get back on the court before the season concludes, though the team could still opt to rest him on select occasion with the Hornets already having clinched a playoff berth. Rookie Frank Kaminsky and Spencer Hawes will likely see increased playing time while Jefferson remains out.

Status: OUT
Jefferson (knee) is listed as probable for Friday’s game against the Bucks.Jefferson resumed full-contact practice Wednesday and didn’t notice any problems with his knee during Thursday’s session, either, so assuming he completes morning shootaround without incident Friday, he’ll be cleared to make his first appearance since Dec. 28. The Hornets will likely bring Jefferson off the bench behind frontcourt starters Marvin Williams (neck) and Cody Zeller, but he could still be in line for 20-plus minutes while Spencer Hawes sits out with a back strain.
  • Knee
Date: Feb 17, 2016
Status: OUT
Jefferson (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice and the team announced that he will play Friday against the Bucks “if the next few days go well at practice.”Jefferson has missed all but two games since the beginning of December as a result of a suspension, a calf injury, and most recently, a surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. After logging his first full-contact practice since undergoing surgery, it sounds like Jefferson is zeroing in on a return. If he’s not ready to go by Friday, Jefferson could realistically be an option for Sunday’s matchup with the Nets. He was averaging a substandard 12.5 points and 6.1 rebounds over 25.2 minutes over 19 games earlier this season, and while the 31-year-old now appears to be entering the decline phase of his career, those kind of numbers still make him a useful commodity in deeper formats.
  • Knee
Date: Feb 11, 2016
Status: OUT
Jefferson (knee) is hopeful to return shortly after the All-Star break, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.Jefferson is days away from reaching the projected six-week recovery timetable he was given following his Dec. 31 surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, and while he could need some additional time beyond that to heal up, it doesn’t appear as though he’s hit any major snags in the rehabilitation process. The big man has also missed time this season due to a strained left calf and a five-game suspension, and only saw 15 and 18 minutes, respectively, in his two contests before suffering the knee injury, so he might not make for the most attractive stash option in shallower formats. However, his contributions as a scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker — even in a limited capacity — could make worth a look in most other formats if he’s still in the wire.

Jefferson (knee) underwent successful surgery Thursday morning to repair a torn meniscus and is expected to miss roughly six weeks. An MRI on Wednesday revealed the injury, which will likely keep Jefferson out until around the All-Star break. It’s a major loss for the Hornets, though Jefferson’s numbers are down this season, and the team has found success in changing its style to incorporate more shooters on the floor. As a result, offseason addition Nicolas Batum is enjoying a resurgent season, while Marvin Williams, Jeremy Lamb, and Jeremy Lin have all become strong rotational pieces. Jefferson’s absence will likely result in increased minutes for Williams at power forward, while both Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminsky should see boosts in playing time as well.

In Jefferson’s absence, Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminksy should each see an uptick in minutes. Jefferson is dealing with soreness in his right knee and is considered questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Clippers.Jefferson recently returned from an 11-game absence due to a calf injury and a suspension, but the sore knee doesn’t appear to be a serious issue by comparison. The Hornets may elect to keep him out of the lineup Wednesday, or at least limit his minutes a little more in order to avoid any setbacks. If Jefferson is unable to go, expect Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminsky to take on increased roles in the frontcourt.

Jefferson will begin serving his five-game suspension Wednesday night against Orlando.Jefferson had been rehabbing a calf issue, but after returning to practice earlier this week and being medically cleared to play, he’ll receive an “active” designation, meaning he can begin serving the five-game ban. Assuming the Hornets keep him active for the next four games, Jefferson will be eligible to return Dec. 26 against the Grizzlies.

Jefferson (calf/suspension) practiced for the second straight day Tuesday, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports. After two consecutive days of full practice work, Jefferson seems to be recovered from his calf injury at this point, and will likely return to active status Wednesday against the Magic. However, he’ll then have to begin serving his five-game suspension for violating the league’s anti-drug policy, which will subsequently keep him out for games Wednesday, Thursday (Toronto), Saturday (Washington), Monday (Houston), and next Wednesday (Boston) before he’s eligible to return Dec. 26 against Memphis. In the meantime, expect Cody Zeller to continue to start at center in Jefferson’s place, while Frank Kaminsky and Spencer Hawes pick up some extra run off the bench.

Jefferson (calf/suspension) returned to practice Monday, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.Jefferson has been sidelined since the end of November with a calf injury, and he was slapped with a five-game suspension last week for violating the league’s anti-drug policy. Per NBA rules, Jefferson can’t begin serving the suspension until he returns to “active” status, so participating in Monday’s practice is certainly a step in the right direction. Per coach Steve Clifford, Jefferson will continue to practice with the team throughout the duration of the suspension, but at this point, it’s unclear exactly when he’ll begin serving the ban.

Jefferson has been suspended five games for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy, Doug Smith of the Toronto Star reports. “We are disappointed in Al’s decisions that led to this suspension,” the Hornets organization said in a statement Wednesday. “As an organization, we do not condone this behavior. We have addressed this with Al. He is regretful and understands that we expect him to learn from this mistake.”Jefferson is currently out with a calf injury, so he will not be able to begin serving the suspension until he returns to active status. At this point, it’s unclear exactly when that will be, so Jefferson is likely to miss more than five games given the combination of the injury and suspension. Cody Zeller is expected to continue to start in his place, with Frank Kaminsky and Spencer Hawes both in position to see increased run off the bench.

Jefferson (knee) will opt into the final year of his contract with the Hornets, ESPN reports. He will remain with the team through the 2015-16 season and then be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2016.Jefferson sat out the Hornets’ last seven games of the season due to soreness in his right knee. He had fluid drained from the knee at least twice down the stretch in an effort to continue playing and trying to make the playoffs, which the team failed to do. Jefferson plans to lose 25 pounds this offseason in an effort to reduce the weight put on the rest of his body and help keep him healthy next season. Though there was no mention of it in the story, the fact that Jefferson is taking $13.5 million over one year instead of seeking out a long-term deal for more total money is somewhat suspect, and it may lead to speculation regarding the health of Jefferson’s right knee. If he were 100 percent healthy going into free agency, it would seem prudent to secure more guaranteed money, so the health of Jefferson’s knee should be followed closely going into next season.

Jefferson (knee) dealt with groin and knee injuries throughout the 2014-15 season, but still managed to play 65 games. His numbers, however, did take a dip as a result, as his average of 16.6 points per game is his lowest since the 2006-07 season, while he failed to average at least nine rebounds per game (8.4) for the first time since the 2005-06 season.Between the injuries and drop in production, it was a disappointing season for Jefferson to say the least, especially after he played like the best big man in the league in the second half of last season. Instead, this year, Jefferson had an up-and-down season following a strong start and finished as the 25th ranked center fantasy-wise. Jefferson posted 21 double-doubles on the season, but there were far too many times where he failed to reach double figures in both points and rebounds. Furthermore, Jefferson ended the season by missing the final seven games with a knee injury, but is expected to make a full recovery. Now, Jefferson will have the opportunity to exercise a $13.5 million player option for next season or choose to opt out of his contract, and given his decline in production, Jefferson says he does not anticipate that he will opt out. Assuming Jefferson does return to Charlotte next season, he will be looked at once again as a key contributor if the Hornets wish to make a return to the playoffs. The team, at this point, does not have many reliable options on offense, and if Jefferson can return to being a big man who can consistently put up at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, it will make Charlotte’s offense run much more fluidly.

The big man’s numbers took a dip this season, but he was banged up for much of the year and missed 17 games. This makes for a tricky fantasy situation, as Jefferson is one of the best low post scorers in the NBA, but he struggled to play through the ailment Monday, posting just three points and five rebounds. Daily players should probably avoid Jefferson until his price comes down a bit, and season long users could swap him out if there’s a viable replacement, but it’s likely he will have to stick in lineups. Jefferson (groin) will return to action Monday against the Timberwolves, but will come off the bench and will be limited to a maximum of 16 minutes, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.Jefferson was medically cleared Sunday during practice, and will now suit up Monday. He was reportedly initially targeting Wednesday as a potential return date, but he will rejoin the lineup ahead of schedule. Bismack Biyombo will receive the start again Monday with Jefferson limited, though it may be his last if all goes well.

Date: Jan 19, 2015

Jefferson returned to action Monday, posting eight points and five rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench against Minnesota.Jefferson hadn’t played since Dec. 29 with a groin injury, a span of nine games. Though he was expected to play 16 minutes, he logged 25 minutes in a blowout win over the Timberwolves. Owners might want to be patient as Jefferson rounds into game shape and doesn’t have any reported minutes restriction before playing him with confidence. Once he is back to playing his usual complement of minutes, Jefferson should return to his 18 point, eight rebound form.

Jefferson (groin) is targeting a return date for Wednesday against the Heat, the Charlotte Observer reports.Jefferson has been sidelined with a groin injury since Dec. 29 but has been able to participate in on-court workouts of late. • Groin
Date: Jan 14, 2015
Status: OUT
Jefferson (groin) has begun taking part in on-court workouts, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.Jefferson is expected to remain out for at least another two weeks, but it’s certainly a positive sign to see him working on the court, even in limited capacity. He’s dealing with a groin injury that has now recurred multiple times, however, so the Hornets will exercise caution in bringing him back up to speed. Expect Bismack Biyombo to remain in the starting lineup, with Jason Maxiell and rookie Noah Vonleh seeing a mild boost in playing time in Jefferson’s absence.
  • Groin
Date: Dec 30, 2014
Status: OUT
Jefferson (groin) will miss a minimum of four weeks, the Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell reports. His status was up in the air, but this is about as bad of a prognosis as his owners could have expected. In his absence, Cody Zeller will be asked to really step into a major role for the first time in his career. Bismack Biyombo will also see increased run off the bench, and it would seem possible that the Hornets opt to go with a small lineup starting Marvin Williams at power forward for the time being.
  • Groin
Date: Dec 30, 2014
Status: OUT
Jefferson (groin) will miss at least the Hornets’ next two games due to a groin strain.Jefferson suffered the injury last weekend and had to be removed from Monday’s game against the Bucks in the fourth quarter after re-aggravating it. He’s already been ruled out for Wednesday’s matchup with Houston and Friday’s game against the Cavaliers, so the soonest he could return is Saturday in Orlando. Consider Jefferson day-to-day at this point, and look for Bismack Biyombo to see an uptick in minutes.

Jefferson (groin) may be shut down for a bit, according to the Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell reports. The groin strain has been bothering Jefferson since last Saturday, and he was pulled from Monday’s loss to the Bucks in the fourth quarter. He hasn’t played well over the last few games, so the Hornets may decide that a patient approach is optimal. That being said, Charlotte needs every win it can get, following a miserable start to the season. If Jefferson misses time, the Hornets will likely need more minutes from Cody Zeller, Bismack Biyombo and Marvin Williams. The team doesn’t seem to have much faith in Biyombo, while Zeller and Williams are already getting significant run.

Jefferson (strained left groin) is listed as probable for Friday’s game against the Thunder.Jefferson first suffered the injury last Saturday, but has played in both of Charlotte’s game since that time. However, he saw minute counts below his 32.7 per game in both contests, and count be in line for another slight reduction in playing time again versus the Thunder. It’s probably not significant enough for those in season-long leagues to keep Jefferson on their bench, but daily game players should exercise more caution with using the big man in their lineups.
