Herrera’s three-run homer lifts Phillies over Tigers

DETROIT — Odubel Herrera hit a three-run homer and Peter Bourjos added a solo shot Wednesday to help power the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Aaron Nola (4-3) went six innings for the Phillies and while he gave up four runs, three of them came in the fifth after Philadelphia had fashioned a 5-1 lead.

David Hernandez allowed a run in the seventh but Hector Neris choked off further damage with two strikeouts and then pitched a scoreless eighth. Jeanmar Gomez notched his 17th save for getting the last three outs.

Doubles by Cameron Rupp and Andres Blanco leading off the eighth put the Phillies up 8-5 after an RBI single to center by Miguel Cabrera with one out in the seventh let the Tigers close to 7-5.

Bourjos hit his first home run of the season to chase Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez (3-6) and give Philadelphia a 6-4 lead one batter into the seventh. A sacrifice fly by Tommy Joseph following two singles made it 7-4.

Sanchez gave up the two home runs but three of the six runs he allowed were unearned. He gave up eight hits, struck out five and walked one as the Tigers lost for just the second time in 10 games.

RBI singles by Cameron Maybin to center, J.D. Martinez to left and Victor Martinez to extreme right in the fifth brought the Tigers up to 5-4. Brian McCann and Jose Iglesias had singled earlier.

Herrera hammered his three-run homer to right in the fourth to lift the Phillies into a 5-1 lead. A one-out fielding error by shortstop Jose Iglesias put Blanco on first and Tyler Goeddel lined a single to left one out before Herrera’s fifth home run of the season, which he punctuated with a high bat-flip. The three runs were unearned.

Detroit cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third when Mike Aviles doubled and scored on a single by Iglesias off Nola’s backside that wound up in center field.

An RBI single by Bourjos plus a successful double steal with runners at first and third staked Philadelphia to a 2-0 lead in the second. Singles by Ryan Howard and Blanco set the inning up. Iglesias might have had a play at the plate on the double steal but he was blocked from making a running throw by second base umpire Mike DiMuro.

NOTES: Bench coach Gene Lamont was named Detroit’s acting manager for games Wednesday and Friday following the death of manager Brad Ausmus’ mother in Connecticut. Lamont was previously going to act in place of Ausmus when the manager’s daughter graduated from high school Friday. … Phillies 3B Maikel Franco was removed from the game after batting in the seventh due to a right ankle sprain. … With the win, Philadelphia is now 39 games below .500 in interleague play (146-185). … Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler remained out of the starting lineup Wednesday with the same flu-type illness that kept him out Tuesday.
