The Blind Side (2009)

The Blind Story is an Oscar winner and a movie based on true story. The story follows a young man Michael Oyer, his journey through high school, and his adoption by the Tuohy family. It tells about Oyer’s hard-pressed journey into football including how he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens.

Sandra Bullock played the role of a strong and tender woman, Leigh Anne Tuohy, who adopted Michael and helped him become a football superstar. Sandra won an Oscar playing this role. However, there were critics made about Oher’s adoption as some think that it relayed mostly on the white savior trope.

Brian’s Song (1971)

Regardless of how tough you are, you probably are going to cry when you watch Brian’s Song. Based on true events, the movie got cinematic release, though it was originally made as a TV show.

The story revolves around Chicago Bears Brain Piccolo (James Caan) and his friendship with teammate Gale Sayers (Billy Dee). Piccolo is diagnosed with terminal cancer and his friendship with Sayers sustains him during his final days. Well, do not forget to grab some tissue for this one!

Remember the Titans (2000)

This movie is centered on the story of Herman Boone, an African-American coach and his struggles of building a stronger community using football. When he is appointed to the T. C. Williams High School, tension is felt between the school, the teachers, students and their families. Regardless of the racial prejudice, Boone stands strong, and this makes the movie truly inspiring.

The Longest Yard (1974)

No doubt, this is one of the best American football movies ever made. Although there are several versions of this movie, the original one tops them all.

Paul Crewe gets in trouble with the police for stealing his girlfriend’s car and getting on a high speed chase with the police. While in prison, he leads a group of inmates to create a prison’s football league that goes against corrupt prison wardens. Not only is The Longest Yard one of the best comedy football movies in history, but it also takes the crown as one of the best prison movies ever made. This is because it highlights the corrupt and brutal American Prison system.

Friday Night Lights (2004)

Based on the book Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger, this movie follows the suffering of Permian High School football team. It features Billy Bob Thornton who plays as Coach Gary Gaines. Gary tries to help the Texas teens with their distress in life as they have a complicated relationship with the Texas town of Odessa.

He faces a lot of scrutiny and is under pressure to ensure that the team makes the playoffs. The team manages to remain competitive despite the pressure to succeed. The movie then became an acclaimed TV series in 2006 which ran for 5 seasons.

The Replacements

This is quite an entertaining football movie that centers on a Washington Sentinels team that is replaced. When the pro football team goes on a league player strike, a group of replacement players led by Keanu Reeves is brought in order to finish the season. Gene Hackman is then tasked with coaching this bunch of big-time wannabes.

Of course, the fans and the team’s stakeholders do not have much faith on the new team. Luckily, some former players are brought in to the team. The Replacements is an empowering story about second chances and surviving when the odds are against you.

Varsity Blues (1999)

Varsity Blues is an empowering football movie that revolves around Jonathon “Mox” Moxon (Van Der Beek). “Mox” Moxon, a benchwarmer, must step up to replace the starting quarterback, Lance, after he suffers an injury. He takes up the Texas High School quarterback, where he has to fight against one of the meanest coaches in movie history (Jon Voight), who uses manipulative tactics to ensure that the players win.

Fortunately, Mox and the team overcome this, and they are able to dictate their own future.

We are Marshall (2006)

The story is about Marshall University and their quest to rebuild their football program. This is after a 1970 plane crash that killed 37 of the Thundering Herd football team players, 5 coaches and other 33 people. A new coach (Matthew McConaughey), the Marshall students as well as the Huntington residents work together to ensure the survival of the remaining team. This is despite the University’s President wanting to suspend the program. The movie is based on a true story.
